The Heart of the Heartland - Giving Back
Every luncheon and lecture series features a raffle to raise funds for charity. The raffle is a very lively part of our
luncheon, since the prizes include donations from massage therapists, healers, artisans, jewelry designers and spa
boutiques! Don't miss this fun for a worthy cause!
Featured Charity on July 21, 2007: The Enterprising Kitchen A unique non-profit social
enterprise providing exceptional natural soap and spa products for customers throughout the world
from our home in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood.
A few of the charities we have donated to in the past include:
Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
For 2 days and 39 miles, everyone who has been touched by breast cancer touches you - in gratitude. Your
participation in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer events - as a Donor, a Walker, a Crew Member, or a Volunteer - will
allow medically underserved women and men to be treated giving them access to the care they require. And hard-
working research teams will be powered by the funds they need to fuel their quest for the cure.
Bread for the Journey
Bread for the Journey International focuses on neighborhood philanthropy - the belief that people are most helpful to
themselves and to others when they act upon their natural impulse to be kind, using their own unique gifts to help
others. The healing that springs from these simple acts of generosity is true and lasting for individuals and
communities.
Each chapter offers a unique blend of practical assistance, funding and encouragement to help people start valuable
new projects quickly and easily - without complicated grant proposals and lengthy waiting periods. As a result,
countless dynamic programs are being born that heal and nourish our communities in ways that are naturally
creative and responsive to local culture.
“CHICAGO KATRINA RELIEF FUND FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN”
A collaboration between Chicago Foundation for Women and Sistuh Fund Giving Circle
Chicago Foundation for Women’s African American Leadership Council and the Sistuh Fund Giving Circle have
established the “Chicago Katrina Relief Fund for Women and Children” to support the special needs of the thousands
of women expected to relocate to Chicago as a result of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy. It is the first effort in the U.S.
dedicated to helping women and their families who have been moved from the Gulf devastation to a new part of the
country.
Chicago Foundation for Women and the Sistuh Fund Giving Circle came together to create the fund in response to
the many direct-service organizations serving women throughout metropolitan Chicago that have expressed a need
for increased resources to accommodate the thousands of women and children expected to seek out their services.
They are also accepting non-Perishable Donation, including: Gift Cards,
Hygiene Products, Warm Clothing (new/gently used), Non-perishable Food Items (food for infants/baby formula),
Towels, Blankets, Pillows, Books and Toys for children
Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS)
NFP Erin Lausen volunteering in Ghana
The Heart of the Heartland community has the amazing opportunity to support Erin Lauesen and Cross-Cultural
Solutions NFP. Erin, a native from Glenview, is just completing her freshman year at Tulane University. She has
offered to be of service and volunteer this summer in Ghana. This wonderful, life-changing opportunity is offered
through the non-profit volunteer organization Cross-Cultural Solutions. The ultimate goal of CCS is to empower
others and promote international understanding through direct people-to-people interaction.
With Erin’s interest in international relations (Her college major), her placement will give her an opportunity to aid
local social service pioneers. In addition to the general humanitarian services that Erin can provide, she is
specifically drawn to helping children. She will have the opportunity to educate young people about immunization
programs, HIV/AIDS awareness, or simply give them someone to play a game of soccer with. She chose Ghana as her
destination based on their need for volunteers and the opportunity to get a taste for a culture drastically different
than her own.
Doctors Without Borders Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian
organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made
disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries. MSF was founded in 1971 as a nongovernmental
organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and bear witness publicly to the plight of the people it
assists.
MSF's decision to intervene in any country or crisis is based solely on an independent assessment of people's needs
— not on political, economic, or religious interests. MSF does not take sides or intervene according to the demands
of governments or warring parties. To maintain its operational independence and flexibility, MSF relies on the
general public for nearly 80 percent of its operating funds. This private, nonprofit association directs over 85% of its
funds to Program Services. For more information, logon to

Educate These Children
Educate These Children is a Non-Profit Organization founded on the belief that all children deserve an education.
The mission of Educate These Children is to provide financial assistance to educate the poor, distressed or
underprivileged children in the world. Educate These Children was formed to help send children to school who
would not otherwise be able to attend. In Malawi the Government provides free elementary school but once the child
reaches secondary school they are responsible for paying for it on their own.
Educate These Children was formed out of love for all children. After visiting Malawi in 1998, Rose Cabot was
overwhelmed by the poverty she saw. Rose describes that “After a few days I felt overwhelmed with a sadness of what I
saw around me and decided then that I needed to do something that could make a difference, even if it was for just
one child.” Even if we could only send one child to school we would at least be able to see that we made a difference.
When you send a child to school you are not only helping them right now, but you are helping to make a difference
for future generations.

Mantle Rock: An Emblem of Our Suffering, Endurance, & Survival
The Mantle Rock Native Education and Culture Center takes its name from a natural rock formation in western
Kentucky by the Ohio River where three thousand Cherokees sought shelter while the river was frozen and
impassable in the winter of 1838-1839. Many of our Elders perished due to exposure, disease and dysentery during
the Removal. Hundreds died, and even more would have been lost but for the shelter of Mantle Rock.
The Native Center came about as the dream of founder "Momfeather" Erickson, a Cherokee Elder raised in a
traditional family in eastern Kentucky. Visiting Mantle Rock in 2001, she heard the spirits of the ancestors directing
her to bring the scattered People back to this area as part of the long-awaited "Regathering.”
The Center opened on Main Street in Marion, KY, in December 2002. The local community, which includes many
whose ancestors escaped the Removal to Oklahoma, has wholeheartedly embraced the Center and its work.
The Mantle Rock Native Education and Cultural Center is a non-profit foundation with 501(c)(3) status. Donations
are tax-deductible.
You can reach Mantle Rock at the address and telephone number below.

Seeds of Peace
Seeds of Peace is a non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to preparing teenagers from areas of conflict with
the leadership skills required to promote coexistence and peace.
While the organization focuses primarily on the Middle East, its programs have expanded to include other regions of
conflict. As of 2003, participants come from the Middle East, the Balkans, South Asia, and Cyprus.
The entry point for the Seeds of Peace program is its international camp in Maine. Working with experienced
facilitators and staff, these teenagers participate in a wide variety of coexistence, educational, and recreational
activities designed to create mutual understanding and respect.
Seeds of Peace has focused primarily on bringing Arab and Israeli teenagers together before fear, mistrust and
prejudice blind them from seeing the human face of their enemy. Seeds of Peace goes beyond international
agreements and treaties. It reverses the legacy of hatred by nurturing lasting friendships that become the basis for
mutual understanding and respect. By training these young leaders in conflict resolution skills, Seeds of Peace
helps them become the seeds from which an enduring peace will grow
